#1) by Veronica Roth (Goodreads Author)
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago , society is
divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular
virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave),
Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of
every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will
devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying
with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a
choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Review:
Okay, this book was weird. I don't mean it in a back way. I just can't figure out something. When I was halfway through the book, it really felt like I just started! Perhaps it was so good it just rushed by but I am not sure.
The pacing of this book is unique. I hate how dystopian book always start out with this person who gets suspicious of the government/society, and finds clues about wrong doing and then tries to escape within three chapters. Divergent is different. The pace of what I described is set in a course for the whole entire book. It was not rushed and it felt different and nice. But with that said, the initiation got old after a while (yes I somewhat contradicted myself).
There were many scenes that were worthy to be put in Nicholas Sparks novels, one in particular...cough cough ferries wheel. With that said, I didn't felt the love between Four and Tris. It felt more like a brother/sister relationship or a classmate/classmate relationship. I just didn't felt it. Sorry!
There was one weird thing I couldn't stand. I am insane myself so maybe you don't find it weird but when Four was shirtless Tris walked slowly around him in circle...I found that super weird. I mean...can you picture that? It was as if Tris was like
Anyway, even though I listed a lot of good things. The biggest problem for me was that I didn't connect with the book. I didn't feel it.
Not this feel. |
And not feels. |
It is the feeling that you get from watching Sherlock jump off the roof while John stands below watching.
It is the feeling you have when Gin gets killed.
It is the feeling when Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood ends.
It is the feeling when you see this on your TV screen.
All those provoke a certain emotion in me. It is because I feel for them all. I didn't feel Divergent.
Audiobook Review
I really enjoy the audio book. I think it is one of my favorites in terms of the way that Emma's voice matched Tris. Emma's voice sounded strong. It is not a squeaky voice that some other audio books have *shivers*. Yeah, sure there weren't any cool music/sound effects sound of the middle grade audio books had or cool music at the beginning of the audio book. I would give the audiobook 4.5/5. Yeah...my short and failed attempt at grading audio books.
I need to finally read it. I need to read it. Arrr ><
ReplyDeleteDivergent didn't do it for me, personally. I didn't like the pacing, however unique it may be. I think I'll read Insurgent on audiobook. :)
ReplyDeleteI think that's what I am going to do too :)
DeleteAww sorry you didn't "feel it". Good review though, I hear a lot of people say the same thing but that Insurgent is much better so hopefully you'll enjoy that one and hopefully i'll start the series soon.
ReplyDeleteAw you are so cute :). I hope you enjoy the series. :3 Yeah, I hope I like Insurgent better. :D
DeleteIt's too bad that this book didn't connect with you! Although I'm happy to hear the audio production was good. I really liked Divergent and have been wanting to re read via audiobook
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by Christa. :D I am hoping that I will like Insurgent better. :)
