Book♥Audiobook Review: Legend by Marie Lu

Legend by Marie Lu
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.

Review:
Okay this review was so hard to write. (I read the book in May and yes, now it is almost September). And truthfully I don't think what you are about to read really counts as a review. Oh dear god, I love Marie to death. Secretly I love her like she is my family (even though she doesn't know it). Basically all the people I know thinks this book is one of their all-time favorites but sadly, this book was not for me. Yes I actually kind of hate myself for loving this book.
This is what I want to do to myself.
I think what got me the most was that the book was just very cliché and very predictable. I kind of guessed what the book was going to be like when I read the synopsis but at the back of my head, I wished that my thinking was not true, but my instincts were right. June was your typical strong female character who originally was under the control of the government but that all changed when the fire nation attacked she met Day. And of course Day was your "bad boy who actually was not bad" type of character. I suppose you can call the characters "developed" since that was what Marie intended them to be like. But I guess I wanted a little more spark, a little more life in them. I hope I don't spoil anything by saying that I really wanted June to do more, to figure things out like Sherlock Holmes, and piecing the facts together.

The plot was slow, and unexciting. And the story just went down hill when June and Day started to "live" together...everything was so slow and boring. I tried to love it but I just can't. I guess I was expecting too much. :(

The thing that saved this book was that there were actually a few parts that was interesting! Day in the hospital, June in a fight, and Day's test.
But I will read on with this series because I love Marie and I want to see if Prodigy can redeem this series for me.

Audiobook Review:
As for the audiobook, it was actually quite good. Steven Kaplan was fabulous. He portrayed Day amazingly. His voice had the perfect pitch with just enough deepness. His ability to fit different roles makes me like him more. As for Mariel Stern, I mean didn't hate her voice but it wasn't very pleasant to listen to for a long period of time. I think her voice (for June) was just a bit squeaky for me. No it is not squeaky, squeaky is not the right word. (I don't know if there is a word for it but it just kind of irritated your eardrums a little). But I can't deny Mariel's ability. The different roles she voiced were good, but not exceptional. Lastly, the music was okay, nothing that mind blowing.

  1. Aw, I'm sorry you didn't like Legend more! I know how hard it is to not be in love with a favorite author/friend's book, even though you want to. (I've had that problem myself, lol.) I liked Legend, but I agree that the characters/storyline are pretty similar to, like, EVERY OTHER dystopian story out there.

    1. Yeah :( Thanks for understanding :). I think the predictability of dystopians just kind of make me want to not read them :\
