Let's Judge the Book by Its Cover! #2

Let's Judge the Book by Its Cover is not a weekly meme, but more like a super flexible meme. You can post when ever you want; no commitment required. I am pretty sure some awesome people out there in the amazing blogosphere probably came up with something similar but these LJdBbiC (yes, the short hand is still long) posts basically will be me and my sister judging the covers of recent cover releases. We might be harsh sometimes depending on the covers but we just want to get our thoughts out there. Censorship, absolutely zero.

Remember the HC?
Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word... especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren’t safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.

Will it attract my attention in a book store?
The hardcover edition will more but the boldness of the paperback cover will also.
Pros?
Paperback: The simplicity and the colour. It draws your attention.
Cons?
Paperback: Too mature. It seems like an adult romance cover. The photoshop job can clean up a bit.
Colour Scheme?
Paperback: I like how it is light but I wonder how it relates to the book. Anyone read the book and can explain it? :D
Font?
Paperback: I love it! It is so simple. It is not some fancy font. It is clear, visible and cute.
Unique Features?
Umm...nothing really stands out for me.
Others?
I really like the hardcover better. It seemed like more effort was put into it. It had this vintage feel to it. Adore it!

UK Cover
Remember the US cover?
Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

This novel is one of Julie’s books that will have you demanding for the second one as soon as you finish your read.

Will it attract my attention in a book store?
The UK one, DEFINITELY!
Pros?
UK: Detail and complexity. It exotic and different.
Cons?
UK: Need a little polishing with the photoshopping. Some of the elements look very harsh and forced together.
Colour Scheme?
UK: LOVE IT! I love how there is this sense of darkness but also brightness. It really catches my attention.
Font?
Not very noticeable. The cover art just attracts so much of my attention. But it is good they kept it simple. I like how it is not competing with the art.
Unique Features?
The whole art itself. I can stare at it forever and realize more detail and things I didn't see before.
Others?
I like the UK cover better, mainly due to the fact that the US just didn't do it for me. I mean the Iron Fey series had beautiful covers, but this one...ugh, not good. It was badly edited. I mean the markings on Ethan just...WHAT? D:? But I like how they kept the theme of the the Iron Fey series. I immediately identify as Julie's work.

Oh right! Check out how the UK cover was made here.

Now your turn! :) What do you think? And what did you guys think of these covers in general? What covers should we discuss next? Anything else should we discuss about the covers? Maybe target audience?  Cover Model Battle?

  2. Hmm. Like the HC of Born Wicked and probably UK cover of Lost Prince. The girl on the HC of Born Wicked LOOKS more wicked and mischievous. The paperback girl looks too angelic. Lost Prince UK cover is definitely more eye catching and gives you an electric feel that makes you want to find out more!

  3. Your picks are my picks, 100%. The paperback of Born Wicked is generic and boring. The hardcover has always been perfect and beautiful to me.
The UK cover of The Lost Prince is awesome in every way. I have never been a huge fan of the Iron series covers. But the UK ones I could definitely get behind!
