New Rating Sytem

Hi guys. Starting from June of this year, FireStarBooks will have a new rating system. The old rating system of giving out 1-5 bows had become irrelevant and consistent. Since each book's "3 bows" felt different and weighted differently. So starting from June 2013, FireStarBooks will rate each book as a PASS or FAIL.

I have been debating about this change for more than half a year now but I was talking to Kate @ exlibriskate.com about this the other day and thought "Heck! I have been thinking about this change since forever now, why not just go for it?!". So I did.

The idea first came to me when I was watching Anna & Kristina's Grocery Bag. I was inspired by Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic' stamp of approval on cookbooks, and thought "wouldn't it be cool to do that with the books I read?".  I was unhappy with my rating system, but at that time I thought it would be too harsh of a change. Talking to Kate made me realized that I wasn't the only who thought this whole one to whatever stars rating system was flawed. I mean the new system is not perfect but I hope it will make the whole "rating" thing more consistent. It sure won't be easy to decide if a book is a pass or fail when it is on the borderline. I will have hard decisions to make in the future but I hope it is all worth it.

Anyway, here are the new rating widget.

I know this is harsh but I hope this will make my rating system more consistent. Do note that just because I failed the book, doesn't mean it was a complete bust. This new system will also encourage the readers to read the reviews more so they can see why I passed it or why I failed it.....heehee sneaky eh? :P

I hope you guys like the new change.

  3. I think it's a great idea. The 5 star system is very flawed and this would make people want to read the reviews more. Might think about changing mine to something like this in the future. Gonna have to think about it awhile though. Great thinking though!

  5. Ooooh, I love it! I was thinking about switching to a Pass/Fail, Win/Loss, Yes/No, kind of system before I settled on my current one.

I've noticed a lot of people think that a three star rating means that the book is bad, which is silly because usually when people rate a book with three it means they enjoyed it. I find that rating systems like yours or mine help with the confusion :)

    The widgets are adorable!
