Review

First off I would like to thank my friend Sheenah for notifying me of this tour. I saw the cover reveal on Facebook and WOW! Can we just stop for a moment and appreciate the detail and the beauty of the art? The art is by Cherriuki. Yeah, just wanted to give a shout out before I start the review. And do note, even if I am friends with Sheenah and Morgan, my opinion on this book is unbiased.

Okay, let's start!
For the first 2 chapters, I was confused with the story, especially with chapter 1. We weren't given any context and that threw me off a bit. The descriptions were hard to imagine. And the added mystery and confusion the author intended was not helping. However, this isn't a total bad thing (intentional or not). Due to the "confusion", the mystery was that much better. I mean you don't want to show all your cards before the match even begin. ;) So it wasn't bad that I was lost because it just adds to how weird and confusing everything is to Stary. Plus it was only the first two chapters, no biggie, because the fun is about to start from there on.

Thank you Zest Books for allowing me to be on the tour!

For me, I never had the transition Ramsey had. No scary moving away from my parents, no experience with dorms, new cities etc. But I still related to this book. Ramsey's background was completely different from me. Growing up in a small town, having 4 sibling were things I didn't experience. But reading her journey through her Freshman year just made me realize no matter what your background is, we will experience similar things, for example being nervous about moving away, getting confused, trying to be more social etc.

One of the things that I related most to! XD

Review: Earthbound by Aprilynne Pike

Review

It is quite hard for me to write this review. I feel like I don't really have much to say. To be honest I was skeptical about this book. I was immediately repulsed by the romance. Sure, I love century old conspiracy, but I don't like love triangles. But to my surprise, the love triangle in this book wasn't bad. Tavia didn't spend half of the book debating Quinn or Benson; she was pretty loyal to one guy. She did consider the other guy but not to the point of hair-pulling amount.

As for the plot, it sounded boring and typical from the book flap. I was like "oh no the aunt and uncle mystery is going to be destroyed by her running away with her longtime crush." But I was wrong. The adventure Tavia and Benson had was quite awesome. It was fast, suspenseful, and exhilarating. It did however took about half of the book to set up everything and for the pace to increase.

Review: PODs by Michelle Pickett

Seventeen-year-old Eva is a chosen one. Chosen to live, while others meet a swift and painful death from an incurable virus so lethal, a person is dead within days of symptoms emerging. In the POD system, a series of underground habitats built by the government, she waits with the other chosen for the deadly virus to claim those above. After a year, scientists believe the population has died, and without living hosts, so has the virus. That's the theory, anyway. But when the PODs are opened, survivors find the surface holds a vicious secret. The virus mutated, infecting those left top-side and creating... monsters. 

Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.

Review

I had a hard time deciding the rating for this book and I'll explain why.

The plot of the book was simple and 1 dimensional. There weren't layers of intricate plotting. Michelle didn't tried to break your heart with feels or connections. You know how sometimes stories linked together and pieces of the book fitted when the story began to conclude? Yeah, those were what I called connections. This book didn't offer me that but that doesn't mean it was a total negative thing. By having a 1 dimensional plot, the story moved fast which kept my attention. Imagine if it was a simple plot that was draggy? Phew, this book wasn't, in fact I loved how the book was such a breezy read. What the book lacked in intricacy, it gained in pace. And having said how the plot was simple, it wasn't a bad plot. The plot of the book was a great one! Because of the fast pace, the events didn't dwell and not did it got dull. It was like turning over new leaves in a short period of time, it had excitement in it.

But not only did the plot lacked connectivity, the characters did as well. I also didn't form any emotional attachments to them as well. It felt as if they were cardboards and if one person died, I wouldn't care and either would the other characters. You would think that a group of teens stuck in a POD for a long time equalled character development, but nope. The conversations were........eek! It felt amateur as if horrible actors were delivering the lines. And adding romance into the pot didn't made this any better. Sure Eva and David were in love but they didn't felt like it. There were a lot of "I love you" and lots of kissing but I didn't feel their love for each other. I just dislike apocalyptic romance. Sorry just don't care. Every single book I read disappointed me, this book was no better. The romance was so forced and cliche. Boo!

INTERVIEW TIME!!

Who is your favorite author and is you writing style similar to theirs? 

J.K. Rowling~! I just want to visit Hogwarts forever. I seriously doubt my writing style is similar to hers, but if anyone ever compared my work to hers, I would die happy and demand that quote be engraved on my tombstone.

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?

I think I give too much thought into the meaning of names. I’m constantly pouring through name meaning websites and books and trying to figure out if it’s a good match or not. And then there are the rare occasions where I just pick a random and just go with it.

How do you get started with writing a story (as in, how do you start developing the story, how do you get inspired for it)?

I think I tackle writing a book like animators tackle making a movie. Or at least, that’s how it feels sometimes. I have my outline and then I start drafting. Sometime during the draft phase, I make storyboards of scenes complete with sketches. To see how my characters look and the blocking involved visually helps me make a scene richer (or at least I hope it does).

What are your current projects? 

I’m currently working on the last book in my trilogy. I usually work on one novel project at a time, however, an opportunity came along where I’m also working on an Alice in Wonderland project with one of my author buddies. So balancing the two projects has been interesting, to say the least.

There are many words I could use to describe SYLO. I could say it was thrilling, tense, and explosive, but those would merely be good words. The best words I thought SYLO demonstrated were: "as refreshing as an ocean breeze." I am not joking. Those words were taken right out of the notes I took while I was reading the book. It is a bit of an odd description, if you were to compare it to the previous three words. Sure, the book had me holding my breaths and clenching my fist, but I'm going to tell you why it was also my perfect "Beach Read."

Firstly, in my honest opinion, I think MacHale nailed the setting for this story. This is sometimes not done very well in YA or MG because people are more focused on the plot or the characters. But the atmosphere established by the author is so important in helping readers experience the story and I am so pleased that D.J. delivered.
The setting of this book, if you don't already know is fictional Pemberwick Island in Maine. I don't know much about Maine, but I am fortunate enough to know about tiny islands. In my grade 12 year, my school's science department once again ran their one-week-trip to the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. During our stay, we worked hard and we played hard. One of the places we visited really helped me establish what Pemberwick Island really looked and felt like. I will link this review to an album from out trip right here. A special thanks to all of the people who contributed to this album; not all of these pictures are my own.

Review: The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

I still remember being in grade 10 and one of my friends practically breathed Sarah Dessen, and who swore by Along for the Ride. Back then I was NOT a contemporary fan so I brushed it off. But now being a contemporary noob, I was sooooo excited to read The Moon and More. For a first timer with Sarah Dessen, I think I am disappointed.

When I started the book I loved it! It was light, fun, and simple. Everything seems so bright and colourful, and I called it "a perfect beach read". It was a novel that anyone could read without wrecking his/her brain (and that stayed true until the very end). I was so very excited and it just seemed like the perfect book for me (because it reminded me of Of Poseidon and the beach-y fun-ness). Wow beach-y fun-ness...what the heck is that Ash??? And you know what, I was super excited to dive into the father issue Emaline had with her father. It got be so pumped. I was raging. I never had father issues before or any parental issues (my parents are awesssuuummmm), but it was a topic that I think anyone could relate. It doesn't have to be a parent, it could be anyone. That feeling of disappointment and being let down is easily sympathizable (once again, not a word). Below you will find a rant by me, right after I read a little part of the book that enraged me. Note it is not edited. It was exactly what I typed when I read about Emaline's father.

Can I rant about Emaline's father. God where do I begin?
Have you ever been let down? Yes? Ever been let down soooo many times by the same person? Yes? Maybe? Well that's Emaline's father for you. He is a smart guy, with a great education background, but what a douchbag he is! He is a sweet talker, acting like he cares and at the moment that you needs him the most? He vanishes. Gosh I hate people who acts like that. One moment you think they've actually changed and cared for you but in reality he/she have been putting up a fake face and was lying to you the whole damn time. All those broken promises. I hate it. I mean if it is only once or twice, I get it. It is life and life sucks. But all the time? No. I don't buy that, not even one tiny bit. It is like giveaways. I know from personal and friends' experiences, that blogging world's giveaways have become somewhat unreliable. I mean of course there are still actual and true giveaways out there but there are so many other fake giveaways as well Nothing hurts more than waiting on something you love and then an email reply of "oops, blah blah blah, sorry, won't be sending this" excuses, excuses. Or no reply at all. OR the worst, promise you something else for compensation and don't deliver either. Two promises, broken.
I just can't deal with him. Joel Pendleton, you suck!

See how emotional I got when reading about Emaline's father? It got my blood pumping, fingers typing, mind ranting. It was the part of the book that I was passionate about, and curious about. When Emaline was with her father, it was awkward but things were interesting and I wanted to see where it goes. Plus when ever Benji was in the picture, I loved every single moment of it. Sadly, this book lacked many of the exciting parts.

Anyway, around half way through the book, I felt frustrated. Why?? Because I felt like one part of the book (not the father part) was unnecessary long and frankly boring! And you ask: what is this part? Well the romance, and the complication.

Note that this review is in bullet form, and each bullet doesn't connect to the previous nor later one...haha my mind is too jumbled for connectivity right now. :P

• What is the most amazing thing about Rick Yancey? It is ability to connect to the readers. You know those memes or posts on the internet that describes something that just makes you "YESSS! I DO THAT!!!" or "YESSS! I TOTALLY GET YOU!!!", well that's what Rick Yancey does in his book. There are sentences that just makes you go "YES!" and you completely agrees with him. He just seems to help readers get their words out. I mean a lot of the times I wouldn't ever realize that's how I feel until he mentions something and I am sitting on the couch shouting "OMG YES! THAT'S SO ME! HOW DID YOU KNOW?!". Rick has the ability to let readers see what links them all, reminding us that we share a lot of the same feelings and thoughts. It just amazes me how he can literally take words out of my mouth.

• Short Chapters...me gusta. I like breaks between a lot of things and I reaaallllyyy enjoys short chapters. I can put a book down and go do some other stuff and come back. I don't really have an obligation of 20 page chapter. BUT that meant it became easier for me to stop reading. GOSH! IT TOOK WAAYYYY TOO LONG FOR ME TO READ THIS BOOK!!! I am soooo ashamed. I'll just stab myself in the corner now.

• What's different about this book compared to other apocalyptic YA novels? This book actually had build-ups, background information instead of super fast pace, "let's dive right in" kind of plot. A good half of this book was background, which Rick wrote it in a way that I didn't mind. Some books, like The Archived, also took a while to developed, but for me The Archived was not building but rather dragging on the plot. I felt like for The 5th Wave, it was a necessity to write the first part, the development. That's why I found this book pretty amazing. It is hard to write a book with a build up and still keep readers' attention. There was this part before the 20% mark of the book that literally torn my heart open. I just bawled. It was such a shock to me, I DIDN'T expected it AT ALL. It felt like I was shoot and just couldn't breath. And at other parts I felt like I was in a swat team, super intense and just EPIC! I was like "damn, I am so cool". Power of Rick Yancey, brilliant!

What do I think?

I LOVE IT! It is dark, dangerous, fierce!! It reminds me of a Resident Evil poster! I just can't! The effects and details look professional. Just fabulous!

I received this book last year from AD and read it in a heart beat. I re-visited it for this blog tour. <3 I love AD to death, and she is one of best friends, but in no way did that affect my review. Hope you guys enjoy~

The book started like no other; it completely captivated me. Imagine sneaky little arms coming out of the book and pulling you into the book...yup. I felt I was thrown into a live action film with bullets flying right past me. My sympathetic nervous system was going crazy. This book will:

But really, I haven't felt this attached to a book from the very beginning since I read Hunted by Cheryl Rainfield. I literally had trouble breathing. It was almost like a very vivid dream, you know the ones that sends shivers down your body long after you wake up? The story wasn't scary but it felt so real!

Please share with us a little bit about Cory and what readers can expect from the main character.

J.I: Cory is pretty much a hot mess. Her real name is Amelie, but since she’s on the run she has to use an alias, and she’s kind of lost herself. She’s lonely but also not good at making genuine connections with people, mostly because she has to hide such a large part of her life. So she lives a very fractured existence: normal life by day, the Furies’ vengeance by night.

Vengeance Bound is really about Amelie reconciling those two parts of herself, and deciding who she wants to be: an agent of the Furies or a normal girl with normal interests? And really, can she even be normal?

“Careful ... the guard is pacing,” Charlie whispered. “We have to wait until he passes to talk.”

Toni nodded, shifting in her bus seat. She cast a glance over at Lieutenant who was sitting further up front. She didn’t look back. Careful. That was what they all needed to be.

The bus guard began walking in the other direction. They waited until he was just out of earshot.

“They can’t do this,” Toni alleged. “There has to be some law against it. Shocking your own students? There is no other place that does this, at least not in America!”

“Actually there is,” Charlie said dismally. “I lived near it in Massachusetts. They use electric shock devices there too. And there’s tons of schools and centers and camps that use isolation, observation, stress positions, all sorts of things. They can get away with it if our parents give permission, and ours clearly did.”

“But why?” Toni hissed. “Why are they treating us like prisoners, worse than prisoners? Why would our parents agree to that?”

“Simple,” Charlie said grimly. “They think we’re dangerous enough that it warrants it.”

“But we’re not —” Toni stopped, and they both were silent as the guard walked down their end, paused, and then turned to walk back to the front of the bus.

“But we aren’t dangerous,” Toni whispered fiercely. Charlie was silent. “Are we?”
