The
Goddess Test
meets Dexter
in an edgy, compelling debut about one teen’s quest for revenge…
no matter how far it takes her.
Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them.
Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

Interview
with Justina Ireland
Please
share with us a little bit about Cory and what readers can expect
from the main character.
J.I:
Cory is pretty much a hot mess. Her real name is Amelie, but since
she’s on the run she has to use an alias, and she’s kind of lost
herself. She’s lonely but also not good at making genuine
connections with people, mostly because she has to hide such a large
part of her life. So she lives a very fractured existence: normal
life by day, the Furies’ vengeance by night.
Vengeance
Bound is really about Amelie reconciling those two parts of herself,
and deciding who she wants to be: an agent of the Furies or a normal
girl with normal interests? And really, can she even be
normal?
For
those that haven’t read VENGEANCE BOUND, what can you tell us about
the Furies?
J.I:
The Furies are a device from Greek and Roman mythology. They were
called the Erineyes in Greek mythology but the Furies are their more
recognizable name from Roman mythology. They were most notably used
for punishing those who killed their mothers and fathers. The Furies
even hunted Zeus after he killed his father, Cronus. All of this
plays into the Furies in this book.
My
Furies have lost their third, Alekto. So to compensate they inhabit
the minds of women. Amelie is just their latest host.
Of
course, female readers are always interested in the potential ‘love
interest.’ What can you share with us about Niko?
J.I:
Niko is an adorable slacker. He’s unmotivated and kind of a loner
even though he has a dedicated group of friends. He doesn’t really
go for Amelie at first, but when he starts to scratch the surface of
her personality he finds that there is something about her that
intrigues him. We’d all like a little bit of excitement in our
lives, and Amelie does that for Niko. It’s the hint of danger and
mystery around her that really pulls Niko in.
What
is your favorite scene or was your favorite to write? Don’t forget
to tell us why.
J.I:
Kissing scenes are always my favorite to write, because, you know,
KISSING.
There’s a scene where Niko and Cory/Amelie have their first real
moment, and it was probably my favorite. I love adding in some
awkward moments between characters. Especially if it leads to
kissing.
Is
there anything in the book that readers may not pick up on or
something you would like readers to walk away with after reading?
J.I:
Eh, I’m of the mind that if there was something in the story that
readers didn’t pick up on then I failed as an author. The words
and story have to stand on their own, good, bad, or otherwise. I
really just hope people enjoy Amelie’s story and don’t leave
disappointed.
What
is next for you as a writer that you can share?
J.I:
My next book is entitled Promise of Shadows and is due out March of
2014 with Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. It’s about a
girl, Zephyr, who is a Harpy. She accidentally kills the minor god
who murdered her sister, and that sets off this huge chain of events
that has her taking on a pretty important role in her community of
paranormal creatures. It was a lot of fun to write, and I really
loved pulling in more of the Greek Mythology element this time around
than I did with Vengeance Bound.
